Move a MySQL database to Plexivo MySQL

Bring a MySQL database from another provider: create Plexivo MySQL, load a dump with the mysql client, and switch your site over.

Moving a MySQL database to Plexivo takes three steps: create the database, load a dump of your current one, and point your site at it. Support can plan and run the move with you.

Before you begin#

  • Your current database runs MySQL. Plexivo MySQL runs MySQL 8.4 LTS.
  • You can run mysqldump against it.
  • The mysql client is on your computer, with the Plexivo CLI if you want to load through its tunnel.

Move it#

  1. Create the database. In Migrations, choose New migration, then Plexivo MySQL and Set up Plexivo MySQL. Give it room for your data. See Create a database.
  2. Dump your current database.
    bash
    mysqldump -h old-host -u user -p --single-transaction --set-gtid-purged=OFF \
--routines --triggers --events dbname > site.sql
  3. Load it into Plexivo MySQL. Over the public address with the CA certificate from the Connect tab, after adding your IP address under Trusted networks if the database is limited to them:
    bash
    mysql -h your-host.db.plexivo.app -P port -u app -p \
      --ssl-mode=VERIFY_IDENTITY --ssl-ca=plexivo-mysql-ca.pem app < site.sql
Or through the Plexivo CLI tunnel: run plexivo db connect shop-db, then load into 127.0.0.1 on the port it prints.
  4. Switch over. Put your site in maintenance mode, take a final dump and load it, update your app’s database settings, and check the site. Keep the old database until you are satisfied.
Before you loadYour app user manages your data and users but not the server’s settings, so dump with --set-gtid-purged=OFF. If your views, triggers or routines name another user as DEFINER, remove those DEFINER clauses from the dump before you load it.

After the move#

For agencies and businesses For a busy store or many sites, choose Move it with support on the same page, and Plexivo support plans the move and the switch-over with you.
